The Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, in exploring new arenas for its operations, bought Daraz back in May 2018 and since then, its impact can clearly be sensed on Daraz. With a global e-commerce giant turning towards the country, online shopping in Pakistan will definitely witness a major shift.
However, the launch of the new Daraz app, after its acquisition by Alibaba, is just the beginning. The Chinese mammoth is known to be very ambitious in achieving its goals which, we think will result in a whole new experience for Daraz, transforming it into a much more sophisticated online market-place.
Not only Daraz, but it will also create an ambiance of tough competition in online shopping in Pakistan, transforming the online market into a better service providing platforms.
Before the acquisition of Daraz, a financial technology subsidiary of Alibaba named as Ant Financial, also bought 45% share in Telenor Microfinance Bank for $185 million in March 2018. And since Daraz has a better integration with Easypaisa, it strengthens the speculation that eventually Alipay is going to make its way to Daraz too, pushing it into a wider sphere of e-commerce websites.
According to Hamaad Ravda, the former chief marketing officer of Daraz.pk,” One of the biggest reasons Alibaba bought Daraz was because of its local vendor network, so obviously, that is something that they value”.
Alibaba’s financial muscle will obviously help online shopping in Pakistan, achieve new heights and will help the users with fraud prevention by providing the vendors with battery analytics and insights and then be inculcated in the design process which will, in turn, boost up the sales and facilitation scale of online shopping.
Daraz, founded in Pakistan in 2012, operates online marketplaces not only in Pakistan but Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Nepal also. Even after the sale, Daraz will continue to work under the same name.
Keeping this in mind, its safe to assume that the Chinese giant will strive to further enhance the communication tools and facilitate users simultaneously by bridging the gap between both and ensuring quality products at customer’s doorstep.
