Mobile App Awards 2016

2016 Mobile App Awards have been dedicated to the mobile apps for the special people in Pakistan – Persons with Disabilities. This annual award is an effort from various stakeholders, including the PTA and telcos, to polish and promote the local talent in the era of 3G and 4G and for producing the local content at the same time.

The theme for 2016 mobile app awards is to help the special people in Pakistan and enable them to take advantages of what technology offers today.

As per independent International sources, 10 to 15% of Pakistan’s population consists of Persons with Disabilities; depicting approximately 20 to 30 million people face some form of disability.

“It is very unfortunate that all UN conventions talk about Human Rights, but there is no national body in Pakistan that takes into consideration matters revolving around people with disabilities. The mobile app awards 2016 is therefore very crucial and extremely timely initiative.”, commented DG Human Rights, Ministry of Law and Justice, Mr. Hassan Mangi.

There is no policy in the country which is specifically designed for the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the IT and Telecom sector. It was also highlighted during the event that took place in Islamabad that upcoming IT policy has a dedicated portion for the Persons With Disabilities so they could easily access the web with the help of various apps and tools. In this regard, Ministry of IT is also reshaping its website for making it friendlier with everyone.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Dr. Syed Ismail Shah, Chairman PTA said “I am hoping that there will be support for this cause from all across Pakistan as work on accessibility does not stop with mobile applications. There is so much more that can be done in this field and it all begins with an understanding of the needs of Persons with Disabilities.” He further said that when he approached the MoS IT Honourable Anusha Rahman Khan for the inclusion of PWDs in the upcoming IT policy, she immediately agreed and instructed the relevant officers to include the PWDs as a stakeholder group.
