Brands including Haleeb Milk are poisoning people with fake milk; SC

contaminated Milk by brands poisoning people

Pakistani citizens have been poisoned by the corporates and the local milkmen with contaminated and adulterated milk. Pakistan is the second country in the world where more than 70pc of milk’s adulterated. This issue has recently been brought to the limelight by the petition moved by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of the Watan Party.

This a suo motu case is being heard by the two-member bench headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar at Supreme Court Lahore Registry. Barrister Zafarullah Khan previously had submitted the reports of Pakistan Council of Scientific Industrial Research (PCSIR) confirming the presence of detergent and other dangerous chemicals in not only loose but in also tetra pack milk brands.

The case has brought forward many astounding revelations. On Tuesday, a report by Punjab Food Authority (PFA) revealed that Haleeb contains a chemical called formalin, which is actually used for preserving dead bodies. It was also found to have contained sugarcane juice. And not just Haleeb other brands like Acha Milk, Al-Fazl Food, Doce, Al-Fajr Food, Gourmet are all unsafe for use.

Dalda Dairies, the manufacturer of liquid whitener Cup Shup, was sealed for producing the substandard product. Al-Fajar Dairy & Foods Ltd was also sealed, as fungus and dirt were found in the plant when it was inspected on 8th December. Doce has been fined PKR 500,00 for their substandard practices, and their production was stalled on 16th December while Gourmet is said to have dealt with their microbiological issues in fresh milk.

Previously, a report of the PCSIR filed with the court stated that except Haleeb, all UHT (ultra-high-temperature) standardized milk is fit for consumption, while all pasteurized milk brands except Prema are unfit for human consumption.

Barrister Khan in his petition has contended that use of contaminated and substandard milk has been causing serious diseases among the citizens, including cancer and hepatitis-C. He has asked the court to impose a ban on such products, bottled water, the sale of quick growth poultry as well as the sale of injections being used for buffaloes for milking.

This scandal in Pakistan shows how much we are willing to poison the people if it serves our balance sheets. Not only shocking is the news that we are all drinking something that is not even close to milk but also how ignorant we are all about what we ingest in the name of health. There was once a time when the companies had to aggressively push the idea that tetra pack milk’s safe and healthy, and now the same brands are creating health hazards for the users. Still, don’t believe the sheer ignorance of users test it out yourself use with Milk Safety Tests (MSTs).
