Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar has ordered a forensic audit of Nestle mineral water and quality check of all other major mineral water companies here on Sunday.
Saqib Nisar along with other two judges vowed to penalize the companies who exploit the natural resources and misuse the underground water while paying back almost nothing.
Justice Saqib Nisar pointed out that the companies have generated billions in revenue, referring to Nestle who alone has earned Rs. 6 billion of profit last year.
“It’s high time to pay back what the nation has given us”, he remarked, while adding that “companies charge Rs. 50 per liter while paying the government 1/8th of the share”.
The suo moto was taken while judges were inspecting the Katas Raj Lake site, whose water has been sucked up by the nearby cement factories.
The court had earlier summoned all the CEOs’ of mineral water companies at supreme court Lahore registry. Aitzaz Ahsan, a renowned lawyer, represented Nestle in the court and demanded a month time to prepare the reports and asked to hold the audit order but judges turned down the request.
“Companies should be accountable, after this case mineral water companies will be allowed to sell the bottled water but on a reasonable price and that too after paying the government its share.”, said CJP Saqib Nisar.
The court has also issued directives to test the samples of other companies to determine are they selling proper mineral water or just the filtered water? CJP added, “After the forensic audit, the court will determine that how much amount the mineral water companies owe the people of this nation”.
