Government reserves Rs 20 billion for Youth Programs; Budget 2017-18

The budget 2017-18 is finally here and the government of Pakistan has reserved Rs. 20 billion for the for skill development, PM’s laptop, and youth program. The fund is aimed at helping the youngsters in Pakistan by providing them a much-needed gateway into the digital world.

The new proposed budget has been kind to the young graduates in the country as it provides them new incentives to dive into the startup eco-system. Finance Minister of Pakistan, Ishaq Dar revealed that the government will exempt the new technology companies and startups from paying income taxes for the next three years.

Previously, the provincial government allocated Rs. 4 billion for the provision of laptops but lately scheme has come under a lot of criticism where educational institutions have been found minting money in the name of “laptop scheme.” Also, many eligible students have to go through quite an exhaustive process to acquire the “free device.”

Nonetheless, it is to be seen how the government will provide relief to the 60 percent of the Pakistani population through its youth development schemes.
