If you are planning to buy a new imported smartphone, you are in trouble as the government has once again increased the import duty on mobile phones in the country.
We are not talking about any gradual upshift or a little bit of upsurge, the per the local media reports the PTI government has magnified the overall import duty on all kind of mobile phones increasing it from 15% to 44-52%.
Electronic Dealers’ Association (EDA) has opposed the current hype and calling it not favorable for business and consumers. According to them, the government has doubled the levies, income tax, GST, and other taxes on imported mobile phones.
Moreover, the government has also decided to impose a “Pre-Approval” condition on imported gadgets especially mobile phones. Now the dealers have to ask for approval from the government before importing any kind of smartphone or smart device in the country.
Consumers are already having extremely expensive mobile phones compared to the other countries. Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, and all other brands increased their mobile phone prices in the country after the new taxes, which were imposed earlier.
“We are sensing that minimum of Rs. 20,000 will be added to the prices of imported mobile phones,” asserted President EDA, Mohammad Rizwan.
It is evident that the government wants to regularize the imports of mobile phones in the country, which is a positive step. However, the government must differentiate the luxury items from useful technologically enhanced gadgets while imposing taxes.
