Ever since the launch of Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Huawei has been busy with throwing hints and teasers about what its new flagship series will look like and we finally witnessed the new Huawei Mate 10 series in all of its glory last month.
The Chinese smartphone giant doesn’t shy away from making a statement with its new devices and the same spectacle was witnessed on 12th October when we first came face to face with Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 Porsche Design, and Mate 10 Lite. The smartphones with the exception of Porsche Design are now available in the Pakistani markets. You can read about the device’s 8 best features by clicking here.
This year, we were more in love with P10 than what Mate 9 had brought last year, but the Mate successors have changed the way we saw them in previous years. The Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are quite a looker but has the older sibling stolen away all the flagship glory or the former deserves to be a part of your lifestyle? Let’s review the device to know more:
If you are tired of the metallic body of the Mate 9 then it is time to rejoice as the Chinese smartphone company has created a stunning device.
Huawei has ditched the full-metal unibody in the favor of all-glass design that makes it harder to look away from the smartphone
Huawei Mate 10 is 156.9mm tall and 8.2mm thick with some beautiful curves that compliment the shiny glass rear of the device. The glass back and metal frame make the device stand out from the competition.
The smartphone is a perfect fit for the user’s hand as it is neither too large nor too small as compared to many other devices on the market. Just like the P10 series, the Huawei Mate 10 has a fingerprint sensor on the front which quite frankly doesn’t seem out of place.
The power keys and volume rockers are present at the usual places which are quite easy to reach even if you’re using a device with only one hand.
Unlike the Pro version, Huawei Mate 10 has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Despite the trend being set by Apple and Google for getting rid of the slot, it still puts a smile on users’ face since affording a good quality wireless headphone adds an extra burden on the pocket. The Mate 10 doesn’t take away the pleasure.
Just like its other devices, Huawei Mate 10 also supports a USB type C port that provides fast charging to the smartphone user.
The smartphone has the same size as its predecessor i.e. it boasts a 5.9 inches IPS LCD display but with a major upgrade in the shape of 1440 x 2560 pixels screen resolution.
The quad-HD resolution during our time with the Huawei Mate 10 worked like a charm
The colors on the screen were quite vivid and sharp, making the movie watching experience quite a delighted one.
One of the best features of Huawei Mate 10 is that it arrived loaded with the HDR10 support which can take the video watching experience to the next level.
The viewing angles on Huawei Mate 10, in my opinion, were quite excellent. The user can also manually change the screen resolution from the options of HD (1280×720), FHD (1920×1080) and WQHD (2560×1440).
Huawei fans are lucky to have a phone, rather a phablet that boasts the latest version of Android, Oreo. At least, the pompous rivals – Samsung especially- couldn’t house it inside the magnificent Note 8, although being pricy. So only a few selected of the likes of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are in the league of early ones who have embraced it.
It doesn’t end here, Huawei accompanies its latest EMUI 8.0 with the latest Android Oreo. The flavor comes with various improvements but I wish that Huawei should reconsider its policy of putting duplicate apps that Android offers too.
The overall optimization has an impact on the apps loading time which has improved 12% this time
Noticeable is the apps specific-launcher shortcut that helps you go straight to a variety of common actions. If you press an icon and hold for a while, this launcher pops up on the screen, for example, a twitter launcher will take you straight to search some tweet or make a new one and similarly Email one can open the compose message interface directly. By the way, it is Oreo specific addition that looks nice and helpful.
There is a Translator app onboard this time that can be used for a variety of purposes not to mention if you are touring a country and you end up finding people who can’t understand you. The app can take input in all three possible ways, typing, voice, and imagery.
Although you can install a dozen languages on your phone and get help for many commonly used sentences, I think the next versions should come with some extensive vocabulary if AI is the future that Huawei seeks.
970 Kirin is what runs the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, so there is no difference here as well. The phone reacts smoothly to whatever you throw at it. we tried to test the limits by doing tons of multitasking and apart from once or twice, it came out as a true performer.
On Geekbench 4, the Huawei Mate 10 scored 1877 in single core and 6464 in multi-core category.
The device scored 172895 on Antutu benchmark
Huawei says its AI mechanism – a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – will learn the habits and usage pattern for optimizing the phone in every possible way. A week or two into using it, we still have to get convinced. At least, 3 months from now and we will see if it runs as fast as day one.
No phone can claim to outshine the rest unless it satisfies your media appetite. Mate 10 gives you a full view of movies on its 16:9 ratio screen, however, the sound is better with onboard speakers and awesome with the headphones on. For customization, there is Stereo+, wide effect and equalizer for making the mood.
The same satisfactory sound experience we observed during voice and video calls and it was even louder through speakers although the standard bottom one leaves behind the second front speaker by miles in performance.
Probably every manufacturer finds the survival through a quality camera and this is what pushed Huawei to marry Leica two years back.
We were really impressed with the camera performance of P10 which has improved hugely this time. This time, the lens combination is very similar to P10 Plus but the biggest difference is the aperture size of f/1.6 which is tremendous.
At the back, Mate 10 boasts 12 MP RGB lens with OIS and a 20 MP lens (without OIS) coupled with a dual LED flash. Other than usual beauty modes, aperture widening button that has become the trademark of Huawei phones, we noticed much improvement in the autofocus speed and an enhanced aperture size that guarantees good photos under low light areas with lesser noticeable noise.
The native camera app also comes with a 2x zoom button that does the job on the software level
On top of that, Huawei has garnished the camera this time with some artificial intelligence that helps recognize the scene or subject for loading a preset option. It was consistent in displaying the icons of cat, food and night mode at the bottom left corner of the app but I assure the AI has yet to learn in identify other animals. Apart from few commonly found fruits, most of the food items and all other animals were unknown to the app.
However, the photos that we took very vibrant, crisp and punchy. Preset, vivid mode is our favorite since it makes the scenes more sparkling.
Have a look at the photos we took with this camera and see if it can land on your list of best camera phones?
Just like its predecessor, Huawei Mate 10 offers 4000 mAh battery that offers a long-lasting battery life for the user.
During our battery test, we used the device quite aggressively and it still lasted for almost a day. While using the device moderately it took us a day and a half to completely drain out the battery.
One of the reasons that the battery lasts too long is the absence of OLED display that for sure is one of the elements that sucks the life out of a smartphone.
The fast charging feature is a life-saver as in just a couple of minutes it can bring back your smartphone from the dead and save you from falling into a digital abyss.
One of the coolest features of the new Huawei Mate 10 is that you can instantly turn it into your workstation without carrying a humongous accessory like Samsung DeX with you.
The user doesn’t have to dock their device with the gadget, Thank God instead all they need to do is plug in their smartphone with a cable and the job is done.
If you want to connect your smartphone to your TV, you will need a USB-C to HDMI connector. Also, you can function without a mouse by turning your smartphone into a giant mousepad.
Huawei Mate 10 offers the best audio listening experience to the user. You can choose the headset type from In-ear, earbuds and head-mounted. You can also adjust the equalizer to get the desired audio effect.
