Huawei has recently taken the wraps off another mid-range smartphone, Huawei Y9 2019. The device comes with 4 AI cameras, two on both front and back, along with the powerful Kirin 710 mid-range processor.
The Huawei Y9 2019 is a Rs. 39,999 smartphone – more class for less money. This is an extremely competitive price point because it’s where there is a lot of competition and a lot of potential alternatives in the market.
The handset comes as a second iteration in the midrange Y series of the company. Since Huawei decided not to launch the Mate 20 Lite in Pakistan, they are labeling the Y9 2019 as the successor to Mate 10 Lite, which will build and capitalize on the success of Mate 10 lite.
However, luckily we got our hands on a retail unit of Huawei Y9 2019 and came about a chance to provide you with our first impressions of the phone. Read on to find out more about this exciting device.
The unit we received was in Sapphire blue which looks as stunning as we expected. You might think the device may come with some tradeoffs but there were none to find. Here is what comes out-of-the-box.
- A wall charger
- A USB cable
- SIM Tray Ejection tool
- A pair of earphones
- Warranty card
- Transparent Jell-O case
Design and Display
The phone looks stunning in Blue color and from a design point of view, you can sense the craftsmanship of the latest flagships in this mid-range. The phone sandwiches a metal frame with glass on the front and plastic body on the back. However, it so elegantly crafted that you might mistake it for glass body.
It sits firmly in hand, thanks to the curved edges on the back which are smooth to handle. Adding, the phone is slim and sleek which makes it easy to handle despite the large size.
The volume rocker and the power key is located on the usual right-hand side, as with all the Huawei phones. The SIM card tray sits on the left side of the device. A worth noticing feature of the phone is its support for storage expansion.
Huawei Y9 2019 presents a dedicated card slot for memory expansion so you don’t have to use the memory card at the expense of your second SIM card. The dual-camera setup rests on the top left on the back.
Huawei Y9 2019 offers a large 6.5-inch Fullview edge to edge display with an FHD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels with a notch on top. This translates into 396 ppi density with an overall 82.8% screen to body ratio. The notch houses the two selfie cameras and other sensors and right on top of it is the earpiece.
The display is quite vibrant and bright and lets you fairly use the phone even in bright sunlight and is capable of providing quite a mesmerizing experience while watching movies and playing games.
Huawei has been improving gradually in the camera department not only in flagships like Huawei Mate 20 Pro but also midrange phones, of which, this device is the best example.
For many users, the camera is one of the decisive features in buying a smartphone which is exactly why Huawei has not held back in this compartment. The phone is equipped with AI enabled quad cameras,16MP+2MP on the back and 13MP+2MP on the front.
Huawei Y9 2019 comes with an overhauled camera app that presents some amazing features like the wide aperture, portrait mode with bokeh effect that gives you a DSLR looking pictures and Huawei’s night mode, which gives a better low light photography performance.
The interface is simple yet effective. It’s pretty easy to scroll through the modes. AI in the camera is able to recognize scenes adjust accordingly.
The camera of Huawei Y9 2019 looks pretty promising and we can’t wait to test the phone in detail and give our verdict on the phone’s camera which we think will be quite satisfying.
Battery and Performance
After spending quite a few hours with the phone we can safely assume that the phone will perform outstandingly in the battery. The phone packs a 4000mAh battery that should be enough even for the power users.
Its predecessor Y9 2018 also came with a 4000mAh battery and our tests proved the unbelievable longevity of its battery which implies the same of its successor.
The device comes with Kirin 710 which offers improved performance as compared to its predecessor, Kirin 659 in Huawei P20 Lite. Thanks to 12 nm process technology, the chipset’s power consumption of the phone is reduced by 30%.
The processor is backed by a 4GB RAM and a 64GB internal memory expandable via microSD card. Like all the other newly launched phones of Huawei which includes Huawei Nova 3i as well, this one also comes with the company’s GPU Turbo technology for an enhanced gaming experience.
Huawei Y9 2019 comes with Android Oreo 8.1.0 layered with the company’s custom skin EMUI 8.2.0. Though the UI has gotten much refined over the years, the bloatware still haunts the EMUI. In case you are experiencing any sluggish performance, you can always tweak your phone’s settings to get the most out of your device.
The phone is preloaded with apps that most of the users don’t even use and uninstall at their first convenience. These include useless game demos and apps like Booking.com and Wego Flight. Other than that, there are some apps that are offered by Google and also installed in the EMUI from Huawei as well, such as the app gallery.
Other than that, EMUI also provides a handful of useful option like if you are privacy freak, you can always use the Huawei Safe to secure your personal data in a vault. Moreover, App Lock can also be activated if you want individual apps to be restricted from access.
You can also use Party Mode to share your music to create a surround system by using several phones play the same music. It synchronizes other phones so that you can play a single song across all the devices.
So far, we are liking the phone and think that it truly justifies the hype. We think it has the potential to surpass even the Huawei Mate 10 Lite in providing a cutting-edge product with a controlled price.
