Mobile usage in Pakistan is increasing day by day and with this changing trend, more people have started to access the internet via this gadget. According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), there are around 41.73 million mobile internet users until May 2017.
This is a new all-time high the telecom industry has seen in the country. An official revealed to Associated Press Pakistan (APP) that 29 percent of mobile users in Pakistan use mobile broadband. This figure saw a 7% increase from the end of the fiscal year 2015-16.
By January 2017, the number of mobile broadband users was over 38 million which relays the digital potential in the country as more and more people are moving towards this practice.
The majority of mobile phone users prefer a feature phone, but still, the percentage of the smartphones is rising by approximately 2% every month. In 2015-16, the mobile phone users in Pakistan spent Rs. 98 billion on 3G/4G services which will likely grow extensively this year.
Recently, Ministry of IT and Telecom has directed PTA to introduce the regulatory framework for testing 5G technology in Pakistan. As per the draft proposal in the directive, PTA / FAB (Frequency Allocation Board) will identify/set aside appropriate bandwidth in the frequency spectrum blocks currently under consideration for 5G.
