In the first two months of the fiscal year 2017-18, Pakistan has witnessed an increase in Mobile phone imports. Reportedly 40 percent
Reportedly, in July and August 2017, the country has seen a 40 percent increase in the mobile phone imports though the exact figures are not yet known.
Also, it is not yet clear that what type of mobile phones have been imported into the country i.e. smartphones or the regular feature phones.
As we previously reported, the tax incentives led to the increase in the imports of telecom equipment after Budget 2017-18. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), in July 2017 the country recorded an import of telecom apparatus and mobile sets worth $114.01 million.
In the recent Budget 2017-18, the federal government placed an additional Rs. 250 regulatory duty on every mobile phone that would be imported from July 1st and also merged lower limit duty slabs of Rs. 300 and Rs. 1,000 into one single slab of Rs. 650.
The price of the features phones will probably go up now as the importers will now have to pay Rs. 350 extra on the import of every feature phone.
Earlier this year, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) imposed a 100 percent cash margin requirement on the import of mobile phones, a move that will reflect on the prices of the handsets.
