Facebook Messenger now lets its users send or receive secret messages that are encrypted and cannot be read even by the employees of the company. This new feature called “Secret Conversations” lets the users send or receive messages that are end-to-end encrypted, with an option to set a timer for them to delete automatically.
The end-to-end encryption feature is already available to the users of WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, and Viber. But should we send the encrypted messages? And when should we send them? We will try to find the answers to these questions in this article!
How to know if a message is encrypted?
When you get an encrypted message from anyone, if the notification says “Someone sent you a message,” then it is an encrypted message. If the notification tells the name of the sender, the message is not encrypted.
If you want to identify a secret message, you can compare the “device key”, the special code given to each device to unlock the encryption.
How to know the device key of any conversation?
Both the parties in an end-to-end encrypted chat have a device. To know this key, start a secret chat with someone and tap their name at the top. Then hit the “Device Keys” option, then, compare your device key with the other participant’s key to check if both the conversations are encrypted or not. If the keys do not match, the conversation is not encrypted.
When to use End-to-End Encryption?
The end-to-end encryption is available to all the users of Facebook Messenger but the service is usable only when both the participants of a chat have the most recent version of this app installed on their phones.
Moreover, the encryption is only accessible on one device, so if you send an encrypted message using the app, you won’t be able to access it on the web version of the Facebook.
How to use end-to-end encryption?
To start using the end-to-end encryption feature on Facebook Messenger, go to the Messenger conversation. On the top left corner, you will see an icon which looks like “I”. Tap it and then touch the “Secret Conversation” option from the Settings menu and then hit the “Turn On” option
