PIA air hostess terminated for smuggling mobile phones

A PIA air hostess caught red-handed while trying to do smuggling of expensive mobile phones into the country. Although the customs authorities have released her, however, PIA management issued a termination letter later on.

The air hostess was carrying seven high-end smartphones which she brought from London. On her arrival at Lahore airport, customs officials found one Samsung and six iPhone 7s in her luggage.

City42 reports that Deputy General Manager HR of PIA, Abdul Haque Halepota issued a termination letter (CF-102016126/SP-2157) to Mehwish, the air hostess, on October 21, 2016.

The letter said “You operated Flight PK-758 on 21.10.2016 London – Lahore. Upon arrival at Lahore on 21.10.2016, you were apprehended by Customs Authorities. During the search of your luggage, seven smartphones were recovered. Subsequently, Customs officials took you to their office for further interrogation. You have subsequently released by the Customs Authorities”.

The letter further mentions the air hostess’s confession which she did during interrogation and the National Carrier finds it a misconduct during her duty.

“In view of your above confession, the misconduct stands proved, and you are hereby terminated from service of the Corporation with immediate effect”, the letter further stated.

35% decline due to Smuggling

Smuggling electronic devices is a phenomenon widespread in the country. The ever-increasing taxes on mobile phone industry have given rise to the percentage of smuggled phones in the country. Legitimate import of mobile phones has been dropped by 35% owing to the smuggling mafia. Just back in August, a passenger was caught by Customs officials in a bid to smuggle 170 smartphones into the country.
