Finally, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has stepped into the 21st century with its new intranet facility in limited domestic flights. Yesterday the national flag carrier announced that it is launching in-flight wifi connectivity service in Pakistan.

This service will allow the passengers to access entertainment content provided by PIA, on their phones, laptops, and tablets. This new service will be available on few selected flights flying on Karachi-Islamabad and Karachi-Lahore routes. The flight numbers that will have this service are PK-300, PK-301, PK-302, PK-303, PK-304 305, PK-308 and PK-309.

Initially, the entertainment service will be launched in two phases. In the first phase, the airline has 30 hours of available content which includes dramas, comedy, kids movies, tilawat, documentaries, safety videos, Urdu feature films, and music.

The second phase will include content like English movies, interactive games for children and maps.

The airline has finally realized that the passengers need quality service in addition to just traveling on the aircraft. Though it is a little too late but we welcome the initiative.

PIA has been scandalized for years and has now made a regular place in the newspapers. Previously, PIA was talked about in regard to its inefficient service, then the untimely fate of ATR-42 aircraft changed the conversation towards safety and reliability of the airline.

Recently it has been revealed through PIA’s briefing to the senate committee that it is incurring PKR 5.64bn losses every month but, a two days later Tabassum A. Qadir, Director Customer Services PIA resigned claiming that the management manipulated a Senate committee about the company’s losses.

So, such a move to initiate entertainment facilities to customers might just be their try to get good PR and just like their any other facility, only time will tell what will come off of it.
