Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) mulls to review the license fee of cellular operators in the country.
PTA thus plans to conduct a study to analyze the renewal period of license that has been awarded to the telcos along with examining how much of the allocated spectrum has been utilized.
Previously, Ufone and Mobilink (now Jazz) renewed their license at $291 million, after the expiry period of 15 years. In the coming future, Jazz, Zong, and Telenor will have to apply again for the renewal of their licenses.
The authority has already issued an advertisement requestion the Expression of Interest (EOI) to hire a consulting firm that will develop an efficient Cellular Mobile License Renewal Framework.
The consulting firm will confer with the relevant stakeholders of the new framework especially Ministry of Information and Technology (MoIT) to better assess and analyze the telecom market of Pakistan and its financial, regulatory and technical challenges.
It will also review the existing licensing framework and the international best practices regarding the renewal of licenses and present a gap analysis report on the basis of these two points.
According to the Telecom Policy 2015, PTA and MoIT were supposed to conduct a periodic assessment regarding the new licensing framework and policy by the end of last year i.e. 2016.
