The Punjab government is going to introduce Orange Cab Scheme to help fight unemployment. Under this initiative, the provincial government aims to provide 100,000 cars to unemployed youth in the Punjab and announced it through its Twitter page:

CM Shahbaz Sharif said that he wants to restrict any possibility of corruption and thus expressed his desire to see the development of the scheme electronically. It would also reduce the likelihood of mismanagement

The scheme would be launched later this year. Previously the Punjab government 50,000 cars to Province’s young people under the Apna Rozgaar Scheme. Currently, Pakistan has many private players that are challenging the traditional way of taxi/cab services.

With the rapidly growing business of mobile application-based cab services in Pakistan, it would be interesting to see how the government helps out the traditional taxis would survive. Recently both Uber and Careem announced very low fares for its customers, which makes it hard for others to keep up with them.

With the focus on the unemployed youth, the Punjab government also recently introduced its e-rozgaar program that aims to instill the necessary IT training so the candidates can become successful freelancers.
