In the last few years, we have witnessed Pakistan enter into another domain in the war on terror i.e. hate speech and extremist content online and offline. The authorities have been trying to root them out from the society or in the least educate the people to report such activities to them.
For this purpose, National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) has introduced a new Chaukas mobile app to report hate speech or extremist content anonymously and securely.
If a person comes across any such activity in their area or on the internet, they can share the information via their smartphone which will, in turn, be shared with law enforcement agencies in Pakistan including the Police, FIA, etc.
How Chaukas Mobile App Works
The new Chaukas mobile app is user-friendly and anyone with basic knowledge of smartphone can use it to report hate speech to the authorities.
It is available in both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. So whether you own an Android or iOS device, you can simply download the app onto your smartphone
Once you have the Chaukas mobile app, you can open it to be greeted with a page that will ask you sign in if you already have an account or you sign up if you’re a new user. A person can also login with their social media profiles including Facebook and Twitter.
If you do not want to login with the social media, you can tap the Sign Up command present below the Login. Then here’s what you need to do:
- Enter your country
- Add the city where you reside
- Move on to the next page with the arrow on the left and enter your mobile number
- Wait a few seconds for the code to arrive
- Enter the relevant details after the confirmation of the code sent to your phone number
- After filling the details, tap submit
After the creation of your account on Chaukas mobile app, you’ll be greeted with a tutorial video which will tell you how you can use this app to report hate speech or any extremist content.
Once you’ve watched the video, you will move onto the home screen where you can see the four options to report any activity to the authorities:
- Audio Recording
- Camera Recording
You can go to the sidebar by tapping the three lines on the top left side of the app. From there you can go for support if you have a query that you’d like to ask. You can also watch the tutorial again or access the latest News related to NACTA.
The Outbox will house any inquiry that is in the middle of transmitting from your device to the authorities and history will have all your last reports that you’ve made.
How to Report Hate Speech
As we explained above, there are four ways to report any hate speech through Chaukas mobile app.
From the home page, you can tap Text to open a pop-up box where you can attach any file and write additional information. You can also share the URL of any website which is sharing extremist content online.
You can also record any audio using the mobile app if you have encountered any hate speech and send it to the authorities or you can use the camera to either a clip/picture you’ve already made or you can shoot a new one.
