Galaxy J4 & Galaxy J6
Galaxy J4 & Galaxy J6

Samsung, the South Korean smartphone maker has wowed the tech industry for many years with its mesmerizing gadgets. The company last week introduced two new budget devices in Pakistan, Galaxy J4, and Galaxy J6 and looking at the specs of the device we cannot help but ask whether the company has lost all of its mojo?

Samsung Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6 are the new budget devices which are here to target a larger mobile phone user base but what makes us disappointed is the lack of value for money the company is offering to its users. Let’s review the two smartphones based on their price and corresponding specs that they are offering:

Galaxy J4

Galaxy J4

It is a fact well known that only a fool would hold high hopes for a budget smartphone so believe us when we say that Galaxy J4 is a big disappointment in terms of specifications.

The new budget smartphone carries a price tag of Rs. 17,999 and very mediocre specifications that are available in many less expensive devices as compared to the Galaxy J4. Take a moment to check out the phone’s specs below:

  • Display: 5.5 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 720 x 1280 pixels
  • Processor: Exynos 7570 Quad
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • Rear Camera: 13MP
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo

Better Alternatives

Now that you are familiar with the specs of Galaxy J4, let’s review some better alternatives that can help you to make a better decision while buying a new smartphone:

Honor 7S

Honor 7S

Honor recently launched Honor 7S in Pakistan and looking at the design, specs and the price tag we are quite satisfied by the new offering by the Chinese company.

Honor 7S is priced at Rs. 14,499 and just like Galaxy J4, it comes with 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 13MP camera at the back and 5MP selfie snapper at the front.

As compared to the 3000mAh battery in Galaxy J4, Honor 7S packs a 3020mAh battery but is slightly smaller in size as the former features a 5.5 inches screen while the Chinese smartphone comes with 5.45 inches of display.

Between the two smartphones, the processor is a deal breaker. Samsung Galaxy J4 comes with Exynos 7570 chipset which clocks at 1.4GHz and was unveiled in August 2016 while the Honor 7S features a MediaTek MT 6739 which was launched in September 2017 and clocks at 1.5GHz.

Lack of competitive specs and latest chipset makes us question why the company is pricing their smartphone too high? Here are the full specs of Honor 7S:

  • Display: 5.45 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 720 x 1440 pixels
  • Processor: MediaTek MT6739
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • Rear Camera: 13MP
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 3020mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo

Redmi 5

Xiaomi Redmi 5

Xiaomi Redmi 5 is an excellent option if you can afford a smartphone that costs close to what the Galaxy J4 is asking for. The Chinese smartphone is available in Pakistan for Rs. 17,499 and the specs make it worth the money.

Redmi 5 features a 5.7 inches display which is a bit larger than the 5.5 inches display present in Galaxy J4. The smartphone features a 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage, the specs that are available in the Samsung’s new budget device.

Redmi 5 comes with a 12MP camera at the back and 5MP selfie snapper at the front. It also packs a 3300mAh battery which is a bit larger than 3000mAh battery found in Galaxy J4.

Again, the main thing that sets the two devices apart are the processors; Redmi 5 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset which gives the Xiaomi’s smartphone an added advantage as it is an octa-core processor which clocks at 1.8GHz.

Redmi 5 was launched in December 2017 so it still features Android Nougat which gives Galaxy J4 an extra point but the fingerprint sensor in the former device evens the playfield.

  • Display: 5.7 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 720 x 1440 pixels
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 450
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Internal Storage: 16GB

  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 3300mAh

Better Alternatives

If you have around Rs, 25,000 budget and want the best value of your money, you can definitely check out the following alternatives that can prove to be better smartphones than the Galaxy J6 based on their specs.

Honor 9 Lite

Honor 9 Lite

We have recently tested Honor 9 Lite for a comprehensive review and we have completely fallen in love with this smartphone. The device is almost the same size as the Galaxy J6 but the former features 1080×2160 pixels screen resolution.

Both devices come with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage but the similarities end there. Honor 9 Lite features HiSilicon Kirin 659 chipset, the same processor that is available in Huawei Mate 10 Lite and P20 Lite, the two powerful midrange smartphones, and is much faster than Exynos 7870 chipset present in Galaxy J6.

Another reason Honor 9 Lite is the better option for you is the dual 13MP + 2MP cameras present at the back and front of the smartphone which work quite amazingly.

The two smartphones have the same battery capacity i.e. 3000mAh and are also come with the same price tag.

  • Display: 5.65 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 1080×2160 pixels
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 659
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Internal Storage: 32GB
  • Rear Camera: Dual 13MP + 2MP
  • Front Camera: Dual 13MP + 2MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo
  • Price: Rs. 24,999

Huawei P Smart

Huawei P Smart

Huawei P Smart is not one of the hyped smartphones by the Chinese smartphone giant but it is truly one of the eye-catching devices based on the specs sheet.

Honor 9 Lite and Huawei P Smart have almost everything in common except for the front camera. Galaxy J6 once again doesn’t come close to the specs which are being offered by a Chinese smartphone company.

Huawei P Smart is powered by Kirin 659 chipset which we have already established that it is better than Exynos 7870 offered by Samsung. The device comes with dual rear cameras while the front camera of the two devices is the same i.e. 8MP lens.

Both smartphones pack a 3000mAh battery but Huawei P Smart is available in Pakistan for Rs. 23,500.

  • Display: 5.65 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 1080×2160 pixels
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 659
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Internal Storage: 32GB
  • Rear Camera: Dual 13MP + 2MP
  • Front Camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo
  • Price: Rs. 23,500

Nokia 6.1

Nokia 6 2018

Nokia 6.1 or Nokia 2018 is yet another device which offers amazing specs and is priced way below what Samsung is asking for Galaxy J6.

The smartphone is 0.1 inches smaller than Samsung’s midrange device but offers 1920 × 1080 pixels screen resolution which is better than J6’s 1480 x 720 pixels screen resolution.

The two smartphones again have the same 3000mAh battery, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Nokia 6.1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset which is faster than Exynos 7870 processor found in Galaxy J6.

As compared to the 13MP rear camera in Galaxy J6, Nokia 6.1 comes with a 16MP camera at the back and is priced at Rs. 21,735.

  • Display: 5.5 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 1920 × 1080 pixels
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 630
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Internal Storage: 32GB
  • Rear Camera: 16MP
  • Front Camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo
  • Price: Rs. 21,735

Oppo A83

Oppo A83 2018

Oppo A83 is yet another smartphone that gives Samsung a run for its money. The device is available for Rs. 20,000 in the Pakistani market and offers MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23 which can be found in the company’s last year’s selfie expert, Oppo F5.

The processor in Oppo A83 is quite faster than the Exynos 7870 offered by Galaxy J6. The smartphone comes with a large 5.7 inches screen with 720 x 1440 pixels screens resolution, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Just like Galaxy J6, the smartphone offers a 13MP back and 8MP front camera for the users but the Oppo A83 packs a slightly higher 3180mAh battery and comes with Android Nougat 7.1 instead of Oreo. You can check out the complete specs below:

  • Display: 5.7 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 720 x 1440 pixels
  • Processor: MediaTek MT6763T Helio P23
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Internal Storage: 32GB
  • Rear Camera: 13MP
  • Front Camera: 8MP
  • Battery: 3180mAh
  • OS: Android 7.1
  • Price: 20,000

Samsung is marketing Galaxy J4 and Galaxy J6 on their Super AMOLED screens which truth be told is quite impressive but this feature is not worth it if it has to come at the expense of affordability, the competitive pricing, and better features that are offered by other smartphones brands in the market.
