Destroying the environment in the name of development has become a norm of this century especially in Pakistan where the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is embarked on the project of tree cutting along the Attaturk Avenue in Islamabad to make expand the road.
The apex court took notice of the issue after the media highlighted the issue which upon reviewing the satellite images of 2016 and 2017 showed immense displeasure over the apparent murder of trees.
On Thursday, the two-member bench including Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Qazi Faez Isa directed CDA to submit a report in 24 hours, after hearing a suo moto case over environmental corruption.
Previously, the court also asked to halt the tree cutting on the Margala Hills but reportedly the decision fell on the deaf ears of the government.
The court also demanded the government to submit the satellite images showing Islamabad in 2016 and 2017 but on the day of the hearing, the officials came empty-handed. Instead, WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Pakistan submitted a report showing the satellite images over which Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed remarked, “You have broken my heart.”
In mid-October, a large number of trees were cut down to make twice the lanes on the roads. The court has asked the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and Islamabad police to cite the names of the responsible officers where Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will carry out criminal cases against the accused.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa during the hearing also remarked, “There is no footpath for a pedestrian in the city, but the authority is worried about wealthy car owners” whereas Justice Saeed said that the authorities should be ashamed of themselves. He also added that the court will not spare any violators of court orders.
