Telenor customers can soon enjoy RCS text messaging, similar to WhatsApp

Telenor RCS Messaging

Do you still feel that traditional SMS app on your Android phone is just useless because it doesn’t give you freedom to do creativity that you can do with apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and others? Wait, your old-fashioned SMS service is getting an upgrade for the Telenor customers as the Norway’s telecommunication company has partnered with the tech giant Google to provide RCS (Rich Communications Services).

With RCS, the Telenor users would be able to have a WhatsApp-like experience. It will enable various features like group chat, high-res photosharing, read receipts, etc. on regular Android mobile phones.

RCS text messaging could be Google’s answer to get back the attention what Facebook-owned WhatsApp has snatched away with its free messaging service and attractive features. Telenor who was rumored to leave the Pakistani market now plans to enable this new feature to its 214 million subscribers across Europe and Asia including the Pakistan. For over 39 million subscribers in Pakistan, we are expecting the RCS to be available very soon.

Hanne Knudsen, Director, Telenor Group Communications while commenting on the schedule of the beginning of service in Pakistan, said;

“We are currently in the process of evaluating and assessing RCS rollout plans, and other related mechanisms and launch date and other details will be communicated in due course.”

“Telenor Group has a long-term strategic global partnership with Google. We have also previously expressed our support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) and the move towards a Universal Profile across the world alongside other operators, partners, and the GSMA, the spokesperson further stated.

She further added: “Partnering with Google for RCS at a Group level is another step in this direction as it enables us to launch RCS in our respective markets. We are constantly evaluating where, when and how to roll out RCS and are excited for the opportunities this will bring our customers in Europe and Asia.”

Since there is a charm of using WhatsApp and other apps free over a wifi network, will RCS also a similar attraction to its customers is yet to be known?

How RCS works?

Google will develop a Messenger application for Android device. The service is said to be powered by the Jibe RCS cloud from Google.

When RCS will be launched in a certain market, Telenor subscribers who already have the Messenger app on their phone will automatically get an access by through an app update, while other will be able to download it from Google Play store.

Also, as a result of this partnership many new Android devices will come with Messenger for Android preloaded as the default SMS and RCS messaging app.
