TV channels in Pakistan can now show Indian Movies on the small screen. According to the Lahore High Court chief justice, private television channels having a valid license can show Indian movies as per terms of their agreements with Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).
The decision came in light of the petition submitted by M/s Leo Communication and others that challenged the ban on the broadcast of Indian content on the televisions. As cinemas can show Bollywood movies, the complainant contended that TV channels should also be allowed to screen Indian content.
The counsel of the petitioner also argued that Indian plays fall into entertainment category and thus should be allowed to air as well. The counsel of PEMRA detested the argument contending that they do not fall into the definition of entertainment.
The PEMRA’s counsel sought time to establish that the “entertainment” did not include Indian plays and the hearing would be resumed on 2nd March.
Last October, PEMRA imposed a complete ban on airing of Indian content in Pakistan. All the local TV channels and radio stations were directed to stop airing the Indian dramas, music, movies, or any other Indian content owing to the rising tensions on the border and the ban on Pakistani talent working in India.
