Last year proved well for Vivo, as the company featured some amazing phones. Not only the sales went well, but Vivo also received some positive feedback from the techies globally. Especially with the Y series, the company tackled the needs of the youth effectively.
Vivo Y91 is an addition to the Y series lineup and it continues to lift the company’s reputation as far as the price and on paper specs are concerned. The phone is challenging the market with some cool features in much budget price as Y91 is available in Pakistan in just Rs. 27,999.
We got our hands on this youngest sibling from Y series family and tested it thoroughly in our lab. Not only we wanted to give you a real-life experience with the device, but we also wanted to test Vivo Y91 against its hype. So, here we are with our in-depth review, let’s see how it performed against our expectations.
Honestly, when our sources told us the price before the launch of the phone, I was not expecting any worthy design language. However, Vivo Y91 proved me wrong.
The phone is made out of two-toned plastic unibody which is similar to expensive sibling Vivo Y95. The polished back has the same premium look and feel.
On the left side of the phone, we find a SIM card tray that includes a triple slot so one can use dual SIM cards and micro SD card simultaneously.
Rights side of the phone hosts a power key and volume buttons which are responsive and tactile. Doesn’t matter if you have smaller or bigger hands, buttons on both sides are easily reachable single-handedly without shifting the phone.
The bottom of the device features a micro USB port, headphone jack, single speaker grill and a mic with active noise cancellation.
The dimensions of Vivo Y91 are (6.11 x 2.96 x 0.33 in) and it weighs just 163.5 g. Although it’s not one of the slimmest phone out there, the curvy sides have made this phone comfortable to hold. The phone carries no smudges and fingerprints, which was a problem with Realme 2 Pro. Also Y91 is not slippery at all thanks again to the curved edges that provide solid grip.
Fingerprint sensor at back is also easily reachable and responsive. Although the company provides a silicon cover with the device, this is the type of the phone which asks you to show off due to its peculiar design language.
Vivo Y91 has continued the legacy of Vivo Y95, it also has a sturdy built quality and I loved the gradient color schemes with these phones.
Vivo Y91 adorns a 6.22-inch screen with a spectacular screen to body ratio. The company has adopted an LCD panel which is not a surprise as it is a norm with the budget, mid-range and even with the most of the upper midrange smartphones. From Honor 8X to Oppo F9, every phone came with this type of panel.
The device supports a 720 x 1520 pixel resolution and interestingly the company has brought a 2D curved glass for the screen. Although Y91 is much affordable, it carries the same water drop notch which we have seen in expensive phones last year.
The screen of the phone justifies the price of the phone. We got no issues while reading text in direct sunlight. The saturation level of the screen is little bit on downside, however, the company did a nice job with the viewing angles of the screen.
Vivo Y91 comes with Funtouch OS 4.5 with the main Android version of 8.1 Oreo. The custom Os of Vivo has its own pros and cons. It is filled with bloatware but that’s the issue with all other Chinese smartphone manufacturers. However, at the end it comes to the personal preference.
The good thing is Vivo has improved a lot its OS and provides some pretty useful elements and features which are getting amazing response from the consumers.
Vivo’s in house Jovi assistant is there which enables you to have some great shots from camera by using AI. In Game Mode, Jovi assistant again comes to your help and provides some decent features while you are busy playing your favorite game like controlling the notifications and Do Not Disturb optimization perfectly.
With the Smart click; the consumers can open camera, flashlight, and even Facebook by just long pressing the volume down key.
There are iTheme and iManager that helps users to manage the outlook of their apps effectively. Vivo is heavily criticized over their custom OS to be a cheap replica of Apple iOS. However, it looks like those days are over as Funtouch is getting better with every new phone.
Vivo Y91 features the tested entry level chipset from MediaTek MTK6762 . Obviously it’s a smartphone targeting the users with limited usage so don’t expect swift performance. However, it serves the very purpose it was made for.
Here are the benchmark scores:
The processor is supported by a 3GB of RAM, again an excellent choice for a budget smartphone. The users get 64GB internal storage which can be enhanced with the help of external SD card. The good thing you don’t have to sacrifice a SIM card for that, you can use dual SIMs’ and SD card simultaneously.
In our light usage tests, the phone do extremely well without any lags or hiccups. Opening social media apps is fast, whatsapp calls and light multi-tasking is also upto the mark. The problem comes in heavy usage, Y91 fails to register anything amazing here. However, like we told earlier, the smartphone is not built for the gaming and heavy multitasking purpose.
Vivo Y91 has got a 4030mAh battery and guys you will be amazed to know the results for the battery optimization done by Vivo here.
Y91 triumphed in the battery department and showed the potential even for a 2 days juice on a moderate usage.
It registers 8 plus hours screen on time while in our light usage tests, Vivo Y91 just consumed 9% of its battery in one hour. During our heavy usage tests which involves continuous video recording in the main camera app, video calls on whatsapp and playing resource heavy games, the device just ate 13% of the battery.
Following the current trend, Vivo Y91 features a dual camera setup having 13MP + 2MP shooters for everyday photography. Efficient 8MP camera is provided in the front notch for those who takes selfies and do video calls.
The camera result proves to be satisfactory if not outstanding. Keeping in mind the price of the device, we were not expecting exceptional results in the camera section and Vivo Y91 didn’t surprise us.
The device takes shots with aggressive AI usage and you can see saturation in the pictures. It also fails to capture much dynamic range. As the smartphone is created catering the needs of the youth. When i gave the phone to a friend of mine, keeping aside the photographer in me. She loved the shots taken from the device and showed no disappointment. By the way, she is 22 years of age.
Speaking of the portrait mode, which is the most loved feature for youngsters nowadays as it gives a DSLR type effect. Vivo Y91 takes some reasonable shots with the right amount of sharpness and blurriness.
Selfies are also quite presentable with and without Bokeh mode. It captures the details well and showed fine results.
This year, it’s the second time Vivo has impressed me with their intent of pushing the limits in smartphone industry. After the huge success of Vivo V11 Pro, the company has presented us with another value for money device.
Vivo Y91 is for those who don’t want to burn a hole in their pocket but also wants a device which is eye catchy, trendy and delivers optimum performance. Having a smartphone with 2 days of battery life is an icing on the cake. If you are low on budget and wants some quality feature with quality design, look no further.
