WhatsApp to discontinue service on BlackBerry, Symbian in December

WhatsApp will withdraw support for all BlackBerry, Symbian and Nokia S40 phones in December 2016. Phones running older versions of Android, iOS, and Windows operating system will also lose support.

After December 2016, users who want to continue using WhatsApp will have to upgrade to a device that supports a newer version of Android, iOS or Windows. Android users still on Android 2.1 and 2.2 will not be able to use this App. Apple’s iOS 6 will lose support and Windows Phone 7.1 users will have to upgrade their operating system to continue enjoying services.

WhatsApp is discontinuing services on these platforms because of the changes in the number of users of different operating systems. When WhatsApp was launched in 2009, the dominant operating systems in the market were Symbian and BlackBerry. A dramatic change has occurred with the emergence of Android, Windows, and iOS phones.

Moreover, the older platforms are not evolving. That is why WhatsApp has decided to stop supporting these operating system as they do not support features that WhatsApp plans to introduce.

WhatsApp is one of the most critical apps on Symbian S60 devices right now as it offers the cheapest mode of communication and end to end encryption. The withdrawal of WhatsApp services will be a harsh blow for the Symbian users.

To cope with the circumstances, BlackBerry may start offering Android-based BlackBerry devices. Unlike Symbian, the BlackBerry users will not have to look for another company.
